SLSA BeachSafe
The Challenge
Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) — the country's peak coastal safety authority — needed a single national platform that could deliver real-time, life-critical information for every beach in Australia. The brief: bring together data from federal agencies, state governments, lifesaving operations and live ocean sensors into one product trusted by millions of beach-goers and the people who keep them safe.
Tens of millions of beach visits each year. Millions of swimmers recorded outside the red-and-yellow flags. The platform had to scale into summer peaks, never go down, and keep adapting as new government data partnerships came online.
The Solution
Nano Solutions has designed, built and operated SLSA BeachSafe for Surf Life Saving Australia since 2015 — through multiple major redesigns and platform rebuilds. Today it is a national web platform with companion iOS and Android apps, fed by a real-time data pipeline that aggregates inputs from federal agencies, state governments and SLSA's own operational systems.
A platform built on government data
SLSA BeachSafe sits on top of one of the largest civilian environmental data pipelines in Australia. Live feeds include:
- Bureau of Meteorology — weather, tides, marine conditions, radar, forecasts and warnings nationwide
- Surf Life Saving Australia — patrol status, hazards, attendance and incidents from 400 surf clubs and over 580 professional lifeguard services
- South Australian Government — algal bloom and water quality alerts
- Australian Ocean Data Network — wave-buoy and oceanographic data
- Victorian Fisheries Authority — rock-fishing safety and mandatory lifejacket zones, multi-language alerts (English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean) currently rolling out
Each integration is a long-form government engagement. Years of partnership work, data-sharing agreements and operational tuning sit behind every feed — and behind a unified product the public can use in seconds.
Built for national scale
- 12,000+ beaches covered across every Australian state and territory
- Millions of monthly users with strong year-on-year growth
- Hundreds of thousands of safety alerts delivered when conditions change
- Native iOS and Android apps on a shared codebase for fast feature parity
- Operational console for SLSA staff and state surf life saving services
Ten years of continuous evolution
SLSA BeachSafe is not a one-off build. Since 2015 we have shipped multiple major versions, expanded the data model as new government partners came online, ported the experience to mobile, and rebuilt the platform end-to-end as scale and expectations grew. The same team that originally launched SLSA BeachSafe still operates it today — which is why every state-government rollout, every new sensor feed and every release lands with confidence.
The Results
- A single source of truth for Australian beach safety, used by the public and by lifesaving services
- Tens of millions of beach visits tracked, informing national water-safety strategy and SLSA's public reporting
- Long-running government partnerships — Bureau of Meteorology, SLSA, SA Government, AODN, Victorian Fisheries Authority — all integrated into one platform
- A proven model for state expansion — successful integrations in one state become the template for the next
- Ten-year operating record with no migration off the platform — same partner, evolving product
Technology
A modern Laravel and Vue stack with native iOS and Android apps sharing a single front-end codebase. Real-time ingestion of multiple government data feeds, queue-driven processing, custom analytics, and a private content and operations console for SLSA staff. The platform runs across multiple cloud providers for resilience and scale during peak summer load.
